Where do you source your pallets? Many pallets circulate in the building and logistics industries , and are regulated with owner and numeration through the Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool [CHEP] which we do not upcycle. We only use pallets that have been rejected for reuse due to damage, those being thrown away or destroyed or pallets not destined for pickup and reuse. Pallets are sourced from local businesses in our inner west area of Sydney.
-
What sustainability and environmental considerations have been met?We recycle wooden pallets that are damaged or are not in circulation. Therefore, we upcycle a pallet to produce something more useful. The pallets have been treated for use outdoors and are therefore somewhat resistant to degredation from weather. They can be considered waterresistant. We use waterbased paint for colouration. We reuse wherever possible the original nails.

How do I maintain the vertical garden? There should be little maintenance required for the structure of the vertical garden. The focus should be on maintaining the health of the plants. We can provide a sample of paint to touch up the VG and provide the details of the paint used. If you have any problems with the installation of the VG please contact verticalgarden.sydney for assistance.

What plants should I choose? We can provide advice on which plants would work best in your VG, considering the location on the wall, how much sunlight it receives and in which season it is installed. Seasonal considerations of herbs, succulents and flowering plants can be researched on the web and we would recommend discussing your newly positioned VG with your local nursery. The VG is ideal for herbs, succulents, cacti, hanging plants and Australian natives. Herbs: choose those that grow well in small pots ie parsley, thyme, basil, chervil, tarragon, mint, sage, chives and oregano. Succulents: mini succulents and small cacti are drought tolerant plants offering low maintenance and fit perfectly on the spaces of the VG, adding colour, texture and are a long time solution as they don't outgrow the space. Hanging plants: hanging succulents such as mistletoe cactus [Rhipsalis baccifera], string of pearls [Senecio rowleyanus] and donkey tail or Burro's-tail [Sedum morganianum] are a striking addition providing a vertical perspective to the VG. Flowering plants: choose your preferred colour and decide on a flowering plant and in which season it flowers. Nasturtiums are a favourite because they are easy to grow, look beautiful and are a perfect edible addition to a salad. Vegetables: if the position and conditions are right why not attempt to grow lettuce and other small edible plants. Australian natives: some small natives sourced from The Australian Botanic Garden Shop at Mt Annan have grown very well in small pots in our VG eg native mint [Mentha diemenica].

How long before we can receive our VG?Under normal circumstances, once you have made a choice of style and colour based on your wall's dimensions we can install within 10 days, assuming convenient for you. Under COVID19 restrictions it will be longer.
